Nike’s Rosebank store had to overcome some interesting challenges in order to successfully combine 2 stores into 1 – especially given that these spaces were across 2 different levels which were sitting almost perpendicular to one another. There was a small window of opportunity where the floors overlap to connect vertically, however due to the positioning of the 2 levels, this meant that a staircase would be at the forefront of the trading space on the ground floor. Aside from the large portion of trading area that this staircase was now occupying, it was also sitting in a very prominent position at the entrance of the store. Therefore a conventional staircase design would simply not do; multiple staircase designs and configurations were envisaged and evaluated between Nike, TCRPV Architects and CADCON before deciding on the final design. The inspiration for the final staircase design drew from European multi-level residential structures that have limited floor area to accommodate conventional stairs, and as such, make use of the more space-efficient spiral staircases to connect between the levels. Some international influence in a local contex.
