The assignment: To bring back The Kingsley Centre is to its former glory.
Project The Kingsley Centre – Retail and Offices

Size 18 000 sqm retail and 10 000 sqm offices
We endeavoured to create a new vision for the iconic downtown mixed-use centre that was originally built late 70’s early 80’s. The Kingsley Shopping centre project places focus primarily on refurbishment, sustainability, and community upliftment, through a fine balance of national and local retailers as well as medical and public service offerings. The upgrade focuses on unveiling the previously introverted development into a vibrant, extroverted experience that connects to the existing urban fabric through the design of gateway features, visible graphic identification, and thoughtful strategic planning. Significant architectural features have been added to both the external and internal sections of the building.
The design includes the opening of the South-East and North elevations maximising visual transparency to help increase foot traffic through the centre. Deep Skylight features over the 3 mall entrances is an effective way of attracting people into the centre and allow for a more pleasant shopping experience.
The 10-storey office tower stands proud on the broad shoulders of the retail plate calling for a bold statement to be made. The façade design for the tower is simplistic in nature but elegant in aesthetic with random pop out boxes adding some dynamic visual interest. By day, the double glazing grey tinted glass façade reflects the city surrounds. At night, the tower mass retreats allowing the façade lighting design to continue the dynamic building feature.
TCRPV Architects believe that the solution proposed to transform this development is a positive addition to the city fabric. Together we endeavour to create a sense of place for the user and in turn hope to set the tone for the redevelopment of the Steve Biko corridor.
